“It’s an artist’s duty to reflect the times in which we live.” -- Nina Simone
Our country has begun a transformation since our last show in May. This upheaval is necessary and centuries overdue, and it requires us as artists to take stock of where we stand. Sweet Little Variety Show has always striven to create a space that is anti-racist, queer-friendly, feminist, and body-positive. We unequivocally say Black Lives Matter, and we affirm our commitment to the work demanded by anti-racism in dismantling white supremacist patriarchal hegemony, including police violence against Black and Brown people, LGBTQ+ people, and people with disabilities.
Our June show is traditionally a fundraiser for Rhode Island Pride, which is honoring its roots this year as an uprising against police brutality led by trans women of color. In recognition of that, we will be splitting the proceeds from our June show between Rhode Island Pride and the Rhode Island Solidarity Fund, which we encourage you to learn more about here: https://www.risolidarityfund.org/who-we-are.
We wish you a happy and meaningful Pride, and we look forward to safely seeing you all again.
